From the Fellowship of the Ring to the King and a couple more well-known faces in between. These celebrities all used to be truck drivers before making it big in their respective careers. Recognise a few?
Regarded as one of the most influential artists in the music industry, Elvis Aaron Presley was known as the “King of Rock and Roll”. But even the King started out somewhere and soon after graduating from high school he was hired at Crown Electric Co. as a truck driver for $1 an hour. Legend has it he even wore his long hair pompadoured to fit the current truck driver style at the time.
Maybe we should bring that trend back. New hairstyle anyone?
With some terrible villain always on your tail and keeping unaware citizens from harm’s way, you can’t get much better at driving than James Bond. Wonder where he got the training?
Turns out Sean’s father used to be a factory worker and truck driver and paved the way for his son before deciding on his acting career. Before finding his calling as an actor, Sean dove into the work force as a lorry driver, a labourer, artist's model for the Edinburgh College of Art, coffin polisher and bodybuilder.
Does your driving compare?
You’ll know this director’s work from watching Aliens, Terminator, Titanic and Avatar (to name a few).
James Cameron has become a household name from his string of successes as Director/Producer/Writer, but he didn’t start out this way. While he knew he wanted to pursue his passion for film making at a young age, he had to find a way to finance it all and he turned to trucking to support his screenwriting ambition.
And the rest is his story… get it?
Liam Neeson is known for his role in the thriller “Taken” where he plays a former CIA agent who travels to Europe in search of his kidnapped daughter.
Before these times of Hollywood fame, Liam had a string of odd jobs like being a forklift operator for Guinness, a truck driver, an assistant architect and an amateur boxer.
There’s a great catch phrase now if he ever decides to get back into trucking: “I will find you… and I will make my delivery”.
And of course, last but certainly not least is Viggo Mortensen who is best known for his role as our beloved Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Like many of his colleagues in the industry, Viggo worked odd jobs to support his passion of acting. From dock worker to flower seller, bartender and even truck driver during his time in Denmark.
These great personalities all started somewhere, and it appears the trucking industry all provided for them the solution they searched for at the time. And in the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, ‘not all those who wander are lost’… especially with GPS vehicle tracking.
