Calling all main contractors, subcontractors and civil construction businesses: this election year, make your voice heard through the annual Construction Industry Survey.

This joint project between Civil Contractors New Zealand and Teletrac Navman aims to gauge the state of the civil construction industry. The results of the Construction Industry Survey provide our industry’s valuable perspectives to decision makers around the country. In previous years, the survey has resulted in several wins for our industry, such as: a successful procurement reset; an industry careers promotion; and improved avenues for highlighting issues and improvements.

Take the survey through this link from 8 June – 28 June 2020.

You will also be in the draw to win a $500 Prezzy card.

Take the Survey

In 2019, the newly established Infrastructure Commission wrote a formal response to the survey, indicating the steps they were taking in the following areas of concern: clearer Government pipelines, skills and labour shortages, and procurement. Thanks to those who gave their perspectives, the voice of the civil construction industry was also heard in more than 12 media outlets including on TV1 Breakfast News, TV3’s The AM Show, Newstalk ZB, and Stuff. You can read the 2019 report here.

In the 2020 survey, we want to get a good overall picture of the sector’s resilience and confidence. This theme is especially relevant in the face of the huge economic shock brought on by Covid-19. Some of our key topics for the survey are:

Covid-19

The pandemic that continues to shake the world, will also shape how businesses plan for major disruptions in future. We want to know what the biggest impacts are, and what measures and support mechanisms your business is using to get through.

Challenges

From sudden changes in the project pipeline to regulatory updates, there’s much to navigate in the construction business. As an industry, we need to prioritise the most pressing challenges and generate ideas on how to overcome them. With good data from the industry, decision-makers can see where more support is needed.

Workforce

Increasing numbers of Kiwis are finding themselves out of work – including people with useful experience in operating machinery, residential and commercial building, and health & safety management. Many of whom would likely be interested in career opportunities in the construction industry. So does the construction industry need more staff in 2020? And what incentives are in place to attract staff?

Procurement

One of the largest, albeit long-term, changes faced by all businesses is the impact of climate change. Increasingly, regulatory measures will move the economy towards more environmentally sustainable practices. The survey aims to find out if the drive for sustainability is evident in the procurement process, whether sustainability measures are being taken by contractors and what technology is used to assist in measurement and reporting.
