When you have a fleet of over 260 vehicles, from small cars to large trucks carrying long-haul stock, you consume a lot of fuel. Alsco NZ doesn’t let that stop it from reducing its environmental impact.

Alsco provides fully managed rental services in uniforms, linen, floorcare, washroom services, first aid systems and business consumables. Alsco currently operates a national network of 20 branches and depots covering all the major metropolitan and regional areas of New Zealand.

Reducing CO₂ emissions

Alsco has a history of being a ‘green’ company and doing its bit for the environment is part of the company culture. The company has been tracking driver behaviour with Teletrac Navman for nine years. While the initial focus was on improving vehicle idling times and the ability to know individual vehicle locations, they soon realised they could simply marry the built-in features with environmental initiatives.

Using insights from Teletrac Navman, Alsco has been actively reducing CO₂ emissions through minimising idling times by offering drivers more efficient routes and shorter journeys.

“If 2km can be shaved off a route that is driven five days a week for twelve months of the year, that adds up to a saving of 520km per year per vehicle” says Glen Carmichael, Alsco Service Manager.

“If that sort of saving can be achieved across the 260 vehicles in the fleet, then it would be around 135,200 fewer kilometres driven in a single year!”

The adoption of the Teletrac Navman system has allowed for much wider visibility into the age and maintenance status of the fleet. This has facilitated the fleet manager’s job in making decisions about when to replace certain vehicles. Alsco is now purchasing newer, more environmentally friendly vehicles, rather than holding on to older vehicles. This is to comply with the upgrade programme they have in place, which is to replace between 10% and 15% of the vehicle fleet every year with vehicles that comply with the latest Euro 6 emission standards. Newer vehicles put out much lower levels of CO₂ emissions.

Competitive sense

These measures have all pushed towards a transformation for fleet management at Alsco, gradually acquiring more and more environmentally conscious processes. Alsco focusses on reducing its carbon footprint as part of being a good corporate citizen.

Adopting environmentally friendly practices also adds competitive advantages for businesses nowadays – with customers being more selective, being an environmentally conscious business makes competitive sense for Alsco. Does it make sense for you?
