Challenge:

Taylors Contracting sought a GPS fleet management system primarily to cut costs. However, they soon recognised the broader benefits it could offer. The need to claim back Road User Charges (RUC) was a significant driver for installing the Teletrac Navman system, especially since the forestry division conducted about 12% of its travel off-road but had previously been unable to reclaim RUC. Additionally, the company faced challenges in ensuring the safety of remote workers and monitoring their activities effectively. There was also concern over speeding, as management had assumed vehicles were driven safely due to the low number of speeding tickets. The lack of real-time data made it difficult to identify and address unsafe driving behaviours promptly.

We’ve seen a downward trend in speeding this year as a result of the Teletrac Navman system.

- Denise Kay, Health & Safety Manager

Solution:

After implementing the Teletrac Navman GPS vehicle tracking system, Taylors Contracting reclaimed over $8,500 in RUC, demonstrating the system’s immediate financial impact. The system also enhanced the accuracy of staff time-sheet audits by allowing vehicle records to be easily cross-checked against time entries, ensuring accurate recording of hours worked.

Real-time GPS tracking enabled management to effectively monitor remote workers, confirming their safety in isolated areas. The system also tracked driving behaviours like speeding and abrupt braking, highlighting areas for improvement in safety and fuel efficiency. With immediate access to this data, management could address unsafe driving behaviours promptly, fostering a culture of safety. Daily reports and a software dashboard provided insights into trends, allowing for informed decision-making and reports on driver behaviour improvements to the company’s Board.

Results:

Since adopting Teletrac Navman’s solutions, Taylors Contracting has experienced significant benefits, including:

  1. Financial Savings: The company successfully reclaimed over $8K in Road User Charges (RUC), showcasing the solution’s immediate financial advantages.
  2. Enhanced Safety Monitoring: Real-time GPS tracking has improved the safety of remote workers.
  3. Improved Driving Behaviour: Real-time tracking of driver behaviour, such as speed and aggressive driving, has enabled proactive measures that have resulted in fewer incidents, enhancing overall driver safety and fuel efficiency.
