Challenge:

Mangonui Haulage required GPS fleet managed solution to see where its trucks were and what they were doing. The business also required a system where they could monitor driver behaviours, like harsh usage, to help reduce bad driving habits performed inadvertently, and improve in other areas of safety – fire, accidents, or emergency – and instantly inform drivers to avoid dangerous sites. For their vehicles and assets, a maintenance system was needed to keep an eye on predictive statistics like driving hours to inform scheduling of services. Lastly, Mangonui Haulage needed to move to a single provider of telematics and RUC licensing.

We were one of the first companies in New Zealand to install Teletrac Navman’s solutions in our cabs. We’ve used just about everything Teletrac Navman released for the trucking industry, including its new RUC Manager, and it’s all added to our capabilities and profitability as a company.

- Sean Sparksman, Operations Manager

Solution:

Since 2000, Mangonui Haulage has been relying on Teletrac Navman technology. Since then, the company has continued implementing and adopting products and solutions as it grows, including vehicle servicing and electronic RUC rebates. Maintenance became easier by using the company’s predictive maintenance tools as it monitors statistics like driving hours and kilometres travelled to inform scheduling of services and licencing, keeping trucks running smooth and all paperwork in order, which avoids pesky fines. Implementing RUC Manager prevents licences from running out, as it sorted out where vehicles travelled, calculates off-road distances and submits the claim to NZTA. Over the years, Mangonui Haulage has been able to turn data into action and make informed business decision. Driver timesheets, predictive maintenance reports, driver behaviour scorecards, GPS and RUC information, and on-demand vehicle usage reports all work together to keep the fleet efficient.

Results:

The implementation of Teletrac Navman solutions resulted in significant improvements for Mangonui Haulage. The company experienced:

  1. Improved safety on the road: The fleet management solution allowed the monitoring of driver behaviour for the better, leading to reductions in speeding and unsafe behaviours – eliminated speeding, reduced idling, improved routes, and ensured driver rest.
  2. Improved customer service: As dispatchers have been able to tell farmers if a livestock truck is five minutes or an hour away, client communications improved – allowed them to get on with their day instead of waiting around.
  3. Streamlined RUC rebates: Using an Electronic Distance Recorder alongside GPS tracking, Mangonui Haulage is easily and accurately able to calculate road user charges, including claims and ensuring all trucks are appropriately licenced.
  4. Predictive maintenance: The system has been able to reduce the occurrence of surprise maintenance costs with predictive maintenance tools that have helped keep trucks run smoothly.
